Just the Right Ticket

Alright so you’re in New York and of course you decide to see a Broadway show it’s an NYC staple. Let say you go see The Phantom of the Opera after all it’s a classic. The average ticket cost for a Broadway show is over $130 per ticket and that’s for shows that have been showing for over thirty years. It if wanted to see the newest show on Broadway you’d pay over $500 for the back balcony seats. Somehow people are shocked by this, you shouldn’t be. Broadway is the top of the line when it comes to the theater. When you pay these prices for a show you are paying for what society says is the best of the best. The entire production cost of The Phantom of the Opera is $11 million. Over its run it has made over $357million. There is a reason that is successful and Phantom is just one example. What people don’t realize is that they’re a multiple ways of saving money when it comes to buying Broadways tickets. One way that not a lot of people realize is an option is going to the theatre’s box office before the show. It is more beneficial to the theatre to have a sold out show than any empty seats so they’ll sell any extra tickets for a discounted rate. As well if any tickets that are not picked up at will call 15 minutes before curtain will also be sold to anyone.
One of the most popular and useful ways to buy cheaper tickets though is through the TDF. They are a non-profit theater organization that provide support to “theatrical works of artistic merit”. As a part of that they have the TKTS booths set up throughout New York City that provide tickets from 20%-50% off the original price. Within this you have to realize that they aren’t going to be the best seats in the world. But it always helps to know where you want to sit. If you go up to them and give them a specific location (orchestra, first mezzanine), they are more likely to find you a good seat rather than just saying “I don’t care put me anywhere”. The main booth is located under the red steps at Duffy Square. It’s easy to locate them as they are always bright red and white. They have clear directions on their website as well as a list of services. They offer a variety of services including tickets for future shows. One of the coolest things about buying you tickets from here is that you are supporting an organization that wants the arts to be a thriving area.

If you have the opportunity, seeing a Broadway show is an amazing experience even though it’s an expensive one. However, if you plan accordingly there are easy ways to save money on it. I highly recommend going to the TKTS booth and supporting the TDF. They are easy, quick, and looking to find you the right ticket.
